For men ~
- Learn a firm lead. Your lead should be firm but gentle.
- Learn correct timing.
- Always be aware of where your body and feet should be.
- Never clasp the lady's hands too tightly.
- Always be aware of those around you.
- Never loose focus of the leaders calls/signals.
For women ~
- Always follow your partner's lead. Do not lead your self!
- Relax. (add a tot of tequila)
- Make sure your rhythm is clear.
- Relax your arms – many beginners have rigid arm positions. caused by anxiety. once again add Tequila!
- The man can't easily lead if you're tense and rigid. So have faith in your own abilities and the man in front of you, and have fun!
Some pointers overall ~
- Be relaxed in your overall body movements.
- Take small steps.
- Good spacing is essential _ close enough to hold your partner and far away enough to dance comfortably.
- Try and keep it even around the circle.
- The man always starts a move with the left foot and finishes on the right, facing the centre of the circle.
- Women should start back on the right and finish on the left. (exceptions)
- Even if you make a mistake, keep going.
- Above all, Have FUN!
Rueda means 'wheel' in Spanish. Couples dance in a circle using the Cuban 'Casino' style of salsa dancing.
The Cuban style is more flat footed than it's LA/New York counterparts. Ensure that you use trainers or jazz shoes that provide adequate cushioning for your feet, but have a smooth sole. (this will minimize sticking to the floor)
Rueda is a modern expression of Cuban dancing. With the music and style from various key cultures, it is ever changing with the mood and music of the island.
